Artist Statement

The Denim Oracle is an art project and artistic practice that I have nourished for the past eight years and counting.

On Halloween 2018, I picked up a few yards of vintage denim fabric from an antique store in Tucson, Arizona. Then I spent the evening reading from my brand-new first tarot card deck at a party. The ancient symbols from the deck helped me form stories out of the questions and concerns of the other party guests. That night, I didn’t know exactly what I would do with my newly discovered fabric.

While I mostly associate denim with jeans and other garments, I knew I wanted this to be a tapestry. I was beginning my education in cross-stitch, and so my desire to see panels across this denim tell a story pushed me to try more, and increasingly difficult, patterns.

I chose patterns based on how strongly an image resonated with me, and what it could mean as a tool for telling stories. A fox. A sunflower. A peacock. A tray of coffee to serve guests. I also began writing out all my memories and stories associated with these archetypes: The time my sister and found sunflowers in at a Munich market. Or the way my closest friends wear the patterns of peacock feathers, looking regal as they do so.

These touchstones inspire my creative writing, but also, inform the ways I process my own life and make sense of the world.

And I’ve realized that the only thing that inspires me as much as Jungian-style symbols is connecting with others to learn their own touchstones, and what it means for their own stories.
